wiki wiki

Since my engineering group was sold off to another company I'm trying to migrate a lot of our information out of Lotus Notes and into a wiki. I've chosen MediaWiki which is basically the same piece of software that Wikipedia runs on.

MediaWiki is a fine piece of software and a lot easier to set up than some of the other wikis I looked at. Still, there is a bit of a learning curve for users to get properly formatted pages. It accepts some but not all HTML tags, and prefers its own WikiText markup language.

The editor supplied with MediaWiki is pretty lame, so I also installed FckEditor which is a pretty good rich-text editor. Most importantly, it allows you to manipulate tables in the wiki. FckEditor required patching MediaWiki, which is one strike against it, but I'd still recommend it.

And I just got word that the new company is considering moving everything to Microsoft SharePoint which is a large content management system not too unlike Lotus Notes. Oh, and it's only usable from Microsoft Windows, of course, which pretty much shuts me out. Luckily I have a copy of Windows XP running under a kvm virtual machine under Linux!

Cosmic

Delicious irony. This from the website of The Astrological Magazine:

We regret to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, the publication of The Astrological Magazine will cease with the December 2007 issue.
