200 gig

I finally pulled the crippled 200 GB drive out of the ReplayTV, took it into work, and put it in a reasonably new PC (remarkably, a rarity in our facility). Then I used the excellent RTVPatch utility to reformat the drive for ReplayTV and copy my old 40 GB ReplayTV drive. Works like a charm now, with many more hours of recording space than I could ever use, even at the highest recording quality. It's a little noiser, being a 7200 RPM drive, but tolerable as long as I'm not sleeping in the same room as it!

GigaGiga

I went out and bought a 200 GB hard drive for about $100. The intention was to replace the 40 GB drive in our ReplayTV (kinda like a Tivo). There is a fairly well understood procedure for upgrading drives in these units, using a nice open source tool and a PC. Well, it turns out that my 5 year old PC cannot use more than 128 GB of a drive because of IDE controller limitations. Bummer. Many a gig going to waste. I put the drive in the ReplayTV anyway, giving us about 65 recorded hours at medium quality, which oughta be enough for anyone. I may still hunt around to find a machine I can borrow that can recover the lost gigs...

The first hard drive I bought around 1987 had about 20 MB, was fairly bulky, and cost about $250. This new hard drive was less than half the price, a quarter of the size, and can hold ten thousand times more data.
