Storyland

We survived the trip to Storyland, a small amusement park in New Hampshire. The ball bath seemed to be the favorite activity (for the kids, that is).

And we spent one day at Attitash, where they had a pretty good water slide and an excellent alpine slide, which is really a looooong fiberglass track on which you ride on little wheeled sleds down a mountain. Think one-man bobsled without the ice.

NY Pics

I finally posted the pictures from the trip to the Marriott's camp in the New Pictures section. It's probably hard to tell from the web-sized pictures, but I think I am habitually over-sharpening. Need to watch that.

And by the way, this picture of Sarah isn't puberty hitting early -- it's a pair of tennis balls.

School Transitions

The kids are now out of preschool and are taking a couple weeks of "vacation" before they start kindergarten at the Atrium School. Just twelve more years... Just twelve more years...

Off to NY

We're off to upstate NY for a few days to stay at Barb's parents' cabin ("camp" in NY-speak). We'll come back smelling of mothballs.

Japanese Illustrations, ca 1929

(via Boing Boing) Wonderful Illustrations from Japanese children's books from the 1920's. They are a great combination of art deco/nouveau and asian motifs. I just wish the pictures were a little larger.

Eclipse 3.0

Eclipse 3.0 has turned out to be an excellent Java development platform. I actually haven't tried using it for C/C++ development yet, but it's on my list. The as-you-type error checking is very good, and even its suggested "correction" are almost always on the mark. Being a java app itself, Eclipse is a bit sluggish, but it 's quite usable.

Making Linux fonts readable

Linux fonts are slowly getting better. But anti-aliasing isn't quite there yet. I'm running Mandrake 10.0 with KDE, on LCD screens. With AA turned off, most fonts look a bit "warty". With AA turned on, most fonts look "fuzzy". Neither is acceptable.
