hacked

Our website was hacked last week by a Turkish hacker who replaced the main index.html page with his own. Other than that he didn't do much damage. It looks like I had left bunch of my directories with 777 permissions (this is a Linux server that I rent space on) which means anyone with access to the server can overwrite my files. It looks like this is due to uploading directories from a Windoze machine. In the future, I'm sure I will be more careful about this. It doesn't explain, however, how he got access to the server. Also, I got lucky in that I had just backed up the entire site after doing some major renovation on it.

Incredible

We saw the Pixar movie "The Incredibles" over the weekend. Go see it.

By the way, in the end credits for the movie I noticed a special "hair and fabric" production unit. I have to admit that the hair really did look good. And I'm not someone who normally notices hair.

Firefox 1.0 released

The Firefox 1.0 browser has finally been officially released. I've been using the "pre-release" version for quite a while now and I highly recommended. Toss out that Internet Explorer! And while you're at it, Firefox has a cousin called Thunderbird that's a mighty fine email client.

The Firefox servers are so busy with downloads that I haven't been able to connect yet to even get the 1.0 release. Hopefully it'll quiet down in a few days.

New uni

I've graduated from my junky 12-year-old 20-inch unicycle to a much more robust 24-inch model called the Nimbus II. At first I was worried that my neighbors might think me a bit strange seeing me riding around the neighborhood on one wheel. But now, I know there is no doubt in their minds.

(I keep thinking that I'm almost of the age when I should be having a mid-life crisis and buying a Porsche instead of something with 75% fewer wheels).
